Spread the mental wealth and pay it forward.

If you have plenty of mental health then you could say that you are mentally wealthy.

Mentally, I’m in great shape despite having incurable cancer. I know, that almost sounds incongruous but it’s true!

In fact, I’m probably in the shape of my life mentally and so yes, I have mental wealth.

But I don’t keep it all to myself.

I share my optimism, positivity and hope daily by posting thoughts and musings on social media platforms.

By doing this, I see this as making me a Mental Health Philanthropist and Hoister of Happiness!

I certainly don’t charge for it (as many mental health advocates do!) and I have shared on a daily basis for a couple of years now without fail.

Making money out of other people’s mental ill-health is not what a mental health philanthropist does – that goes against the grain!

Now we normally associate the word philanthropy with mega-rich business titans who give generously by funding the poor, charities and various worthwhile causes where money makes a real difference.

But philanthropy isn’t just about funding through money. It has a much wider meaning than that.

In it’s original meaning, philanthropy meant ‘love of humanity’ and that for me is where its true identity can be found.

In my eyes, philanthropy means being generous in other ways by sharing your energy, time, kindness, insights, wisdom, experience, skills, knowledge, talent, love or some other non-monetary treasures.

Why?

To help people enjoy better lives, to help people improve the quality of their lives so that they too can pay it forward.

Many philanthropists are driven by a deep desire to solve social problems and help others and they do that through their material wealth.

I’m driven to help people with their mental health by sharing my own mental wealth. It’s taken me years to get to the stage that I am at now and my mental wealth has been hard won through many battles, traumas and life experiences.

That isn’t a humble brag either. I recognise that I enjoy a very positive outlook and mindset so I genuinely want to share this with others because I see how many people struggle and suffer.

Materially, I don’t have a penny to my name. I’m broke and have been ever since I had to stop working because of cancer.

But what I do possess is plenty of mental health wealth and a free-range optimism I can share through messages, sayings, tips and positive pointers which will benefit someone else in need of a boost.

Being a Mental Health Philanthropist is spreading mental wealth to fellow members of the human race, sharing goodwill and promoting human welfare. That can often be worth more than $1 million dollars.

If you are in a good place mentally then you have mental wealth to share and that will do someone else a lot of good. It will also make you feel good too!

‘Giving away’ mental health only adds more wealth to your own emotional and mental well-being.

So, as the world mostly sees it, philanthropy is the use of private assets for public good. But if we see ‘private assets’ to also include mental resources then we are on to a world-wide winner.

Why wouldn’t you want to share your insights if it meant making others healthier and happier?

Look, we are in this together so we have to help each other no strings attached and no invoices either!

We pass it on, we pay it forward and we all reap the rewards of better mental health.

Mental Health Philanthropists make it their mission to elevate others, to upgrade their thinking and strengthen mindsets so they can meet the challenges they face with energy, hope and courage.

If you have mental health gold to share then go ahead and share some nuggets and perhaps some bars too!

Your mental wealth can be pure gold to someone in need.

Go on, if you have the resources, be a Mental Health Philanthropist and a Hoister of Happiness!

  1. Totally agree with everything you are saying here. I am commenting here not to ‘flog’ my own efforts to you but to resonate completely my own feelings. I’ve just started my own blog to hopefully aid well-being around a central theme of walking which has been many months in the making. By all means, take a look, it’s on twitter and on my profile called footstepconversations.
However, I am not here for you to sign up or anything. I’m here because I admire what you do and I could never sell my words for profit. I have been helped freely over the years by many writers who have given their time so graciously. I’m not saying it is wrong to want paying for your services but personally for me, I want to keep any subscriptions free, to the point of need and interest.
Thank you so much for everything you are doing. My recent comment to you on X about a friend’s daughter with an aggressive cancer diagnosis is very sad. She died last week, having waited so long for treatment. She only managed one round of chemo. You have a particular medicine that is pure gold and life giving. If it could be corked and put into a bottle, it would be seen as a true elixir of life.
