Cancer is a ‘threshold moment’ that alters the course of your life and opens up doors that you never knew existed. It also closes quite a lot as well.
Once you’ve crossed that threshold, there is no going back.
It’s not like you had a choice either. This is a step you didn’t want to take. And you didn’t. You were shoved.
That sounds scary and it is.
But it’s also exciting because that means you are now a Threshold Adventurer.
You become part of a whole different ball game. Like it or not, you’re committed.
Being a threshold adventurer is not like being Indian Jones though. It’s much bigger than that.
Expect drama, it’s full of it and you’ll be right in the thick of it.
You won’t be able to step back through the door you came in but you will encounter many more doors knocking for your attention. Be bold and step through them.
Being a cancer survivor and threshold adventurer necessitates the following:
- living with precariousness
- taking small, medium, large and XL risks
- pushing the outer limits
- being a liquid optimist
- not being afraid of the dark
- never losing hope
- being creative with your energy
Cancer is mostly seen in such negative terms largely because it is. But if we can focus on wellness and not an illness, it flips the narrative!
You are not standing on the threshold of an adventure. You are living it right now and that means embracing it like it or not!
You have left the ordinary world behind. You can beat the odds but it won’t come easy and you will have to work at it. This is tough work but for a big pay-off i.e. you get to live. It will require more than one leap of faith.
Okay, the cancer adventure doesn’t involve running from a 12-foot boulder, cutting rope bridges, landing a plane or stealing a truck carrying the Ark. It will be more intense than that.
You will be prodded, poked, injected, scanned, slashed, poisoned and burnt. And that’s in a good week.
You will find yourself in tricky situations on a regular basis. There will be booby traps all over the place and yes, there will be snakes. You are going to have to crack the whip more than a few times and yes, you are going to get whupped.
Cancer will be that boulder trying to flatten you. But you, being Indy, will run from it and get away!
But in between times and allowing for recovery, you will do things again and you will also do things that you wouldn’t have otherwise done in your life BC (Before Cancer).
A threshold adventurer doesn’t do it all alone and this experience doesn’t have to be a solo one. In fact, it can’t be.
We need to team up with people that have specialised knowledge and skills to stack the odds in our favour.
When you can, leverage their expertise to escape from the hole you are in. It’s what Indy would do!
As a cancer threshold adventurer I can tell you now that you will have plenty of dramas to deal with and you will definitely have to make things up as you go along. I don’t have all the answers, I just do what I can with the resources I have.
It’s time to don your fedora and bring out the bullwhip!
