It’s that time of the year again when we look back over the shoulder at what people were getting excited about in 2019.
Here’s just a few of the things teachers have fallen for in 2019:
1. Rosenshine’s Principles
….rise and shine with Rosenshine. We all know someone who bangs on about Rosenshine and ‘consultants’ are making decent money on the back of his work. It’s been in every CPD PowerPoint.
2. Dual coding
…..from the Ministry of The Obvious. Give something a new name and people love to drop it into CPD sessions. Let’s draw the line.
3. Cognitive load theory
….please, I can’t take much more of this.
4. Evidence-based research
….umm, I hate to break it to you but it’s actually ‘evidence-informed’.
5. No marking
….really? Do we even have to go there? Parents aren’t impressed with your new verbal diarrhoea feedback policy.
6. Intent, implementation and impact
…..not the next big thing. Just do what you do. Your curriculum is out-dated anyway.
7. Deep dives
….if you weren’t ready for this then what have you been doing for the last 20 years? It’s too late to get your knickers in a twist. You should be ready.
8. 21st Century skills
…..students are more worried about whether their phones have a signal. Nothing new to see here.
9. Well-being
….there is no fix and your head teacher really doesn’t care. Soldier on.
10. Distributed practice
….when it comes to revision then spreading out study over time really works. Who knew?

….cognitive scientists question whether retrieval improves performance in complex tasks so it is yet another bandwagon to watch our for.
